How We Handle Reader Information

A plain account of what happens to letters, classifieds, contact form messages and digest requests at Cape Senior Chronicle.

Letters and submitted stories

When you send a letter or a story, we read it and decide whether it fits the paper. Pieces may be trimmed or lightly edited for length and clarity before they go to print. Your name and contact details are kept only so we can reply to you or prepare the piece for publication. We do not pass them to anyone else.

Classifieds listings

Classifieds for second-hand furniture and hobby equipment are handled the same way. We use the details you give us to place the listing and to answer any question about it. Once a listing has run its course, you can ask us to remove it, and we will do so.

Contact form messages

The contact form sends your message to the site's handler and then shows a thank-you page. It does not create an account, a subscription or a saved profile. The handler logs the submitted values, the time of submission, the form identifier, the page language and the source query string to a local file at /private/submissions.jsonl. There is no automatic deletion: entries stay until the site owner removes the log by hand.

The free weekly digest

Readers who ask for the digest give us a first name, an email address, an edition preference and, if they wish, a suburb, a main interest and a note to the editors. We use those details to send the digest and to match events diary entries to your area. You can ask us to stop at any time, and we will take you off the list.

Your rights

You may ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, or receive a copy in a portable form. You may also withdraw consent for the digest or opt out of any future contact. Write to us and we will act on the request.

What we do not do

We do not track readers across the site, sell personal information, or use cookies for advertising. We make no misleading claims, no invented endorsements and no guaranteed outcomes. The paper is published from Johannesburg, and South African law governs how we handle personal information.
